Common questions
The questions families ask most.
Answered in plain English. If yours is not here, just ask.
What is funeral preplanning?
It is deciding your service, the funeral home, and how it will be paid for while you can still speak for yourself, and putting it in writing. It is paperwork with a purpose: your family will not have to guess.
How does a prepaid plan handle future price changes?
It depends on the contract type. In North Carolina a standard preneed contract applies the funds to prices at the time of death, without protection against increases. An inflation-proof contract covers the selected funeral goods and services without regard to future price increases. Some third-party costs, such as cemetery charges or death certificates, may not be included. Duane will show you exactly what is and is not covered.
Can I pay over time?
Often, yes. Plans can usually be paid in one payment or spread over a period of years. Duane will show you the full total and the options before you decide anything.
What if I move?
It depends on the contract. Under North Carolina law, an irrevocable preneed contract can be transferred to another licensed preneed funeral establishment on written notice. Ask how transfers work, and whether any retained amount is credited, before you sign. More on NC contracts.
Can I change my plan later?
Yes. Your service wishes can be updated as life changes. Duane stays in touch and is available when you want to make changes.
Can my spouse and I plan together?
Absolutely, and many couples do. Planning together means your wishes fit together and neither of you is left to do it alone later.
Do I have to choose a funeral home first?
Having one in mind helps, but it is fine if you have not decided. Duane can talk with you about your options.
What does an advertised low price include?
Usually one line item, not a full arrangement. The funeral home’s itemized price list shows the rest. See Costs & price lists.
Can I get a funeral home’s price list?
Yes. Under the FTC Funeral Rule, any funeral home must give you its General Price List when you ask in person, and must give prices over the phone.
I live outside North Carolina. Can you still help?
Often, yes. Duane can answer general questions, share free planning tools, and, if you ask, suggest funeral professionals he knows in other states. The choice of provider is always yours. Send a note and he will reply.
A death has just occurred. What do I do?
If the death was unexpected or at home and no one is caring for the person, call 911 first. Then call (919) 822-2010 or send a note and Duane will help you with the next steps.
Is there any obligation if I call?
None. A first call is usually about 15 minutes. There is nothing to sign and no pressure.
Ready when you are
Most first calls take about 15 minutes. No pressure, no obligation.
